Submission Policy

Picture
Reasonably Priced Comics is a small press publisher committed to bringing our readers high quality comics for the best price. We've been priviledged to work with some fantastic writers and artists, and we're always looking to make connections with more creators who share our vision of what good comics should be.

We are currently looking at submissions for our Reasonably Priced Comics anthology, and if you have a short story you think we'd be interested in we'd be happy to take a look. We are mostly looking for standalone stories, but are willing to consider serials if it's the right story.

We are not currently looking at submissions for new series.

Due to increased submissions volume we can no longer respond to every submission. Any submissions that do not conform to the guidelines below will be deleted.

Creator Terms

If your work is accepted for one of our publications, you will be responsible for assembling your team; finding an artist if you are a writer, finding a writer if you are an artist/plotter, etc. Reasonably Priced Comics typically does not match up creators at this time. Unfortunately, we simply don't have the bandwidth to do so as we are focused on creating, marketing and promoting comics.

If your story is accepted for one of our anthology publications, please be aware that we do not pay out in cash. Each creative team involved receives a set number of comped copies of the book to sell, give out at conventions, etc. Additionally, you may purchase as many copies as you like at cost plus shipping to sell for a profit that belongs to you and your collaborators any way you choose to split it. Anyone who has worked in the comic book industry for even a short time has certainly heard of the nebulous "back end deal" in which you work, essentially for free, in the hopes of making money if the book sells. We just don't believe in that. Our books DO get published and as creators you WILL have an opportunity to make money from the books you are published in as well as gain the additional exposure being published in one of our books brings.

Submission Guidelines

Artists -
We are always looking for talented freelance artists, especially those skilled in multiple styles, both for our staff writers to work with on current projects and potentially for future projects in the works. Generally, the best way to start is to send us a link to your website with your best art samples (deviantart.com or comicspace.com for example) along with what kind of work you're looking to do (pencil, ink, color, etc). Please don't fill our mailbox with large image files; if you don't have a website where your art is hosted, drop us a line and we'll tell you how you can get your work in front of us. If we are interested in working with you, we'll let you know as soon  as possible and let you know what kind of need we have. At that time, compensation will be discussed.

If you are a penciler, we want to see your best sequential art (panel-to-panel) so we can see how you tell a story. Pin-ups are great, but they don't tell a story and we are in the storytelling business.

If you are an inker or colorist, please include images of the pencils you've inked over or the uncolored work you've colored for reference.

If you are a letterer, please include both sequentials you've lettered as well as logos you've designed. We want to see how you place a balloon or caption box as well as how you grab people's attention.

Writers - We are generally not seeking script-only submissions at this time, but if you have an artist attached we are happy to take a look. Please remember that stories for the Reasonably Priced Comics anthology are typically 4, 8 or 10 pages, though we make exceptions when the right story comes along. Stories for the anthology are preferably stand alone tales, but we may consider serials if we are intrigued by your story premise.

What we are looking for in a writer's submission is a clear understanding of what your story is about; an overview of a page or less detailing the story, the characters and who is involved creatively are required as are script samples. If you have them, we'd like to see art samples as well. If not, we'd like to see samples of art your artist has done in the past. If you'd like to let us know about previously published work you've done, by all means do so, but it is not neccessary to have past experience. Everyone has to start somewhere, after all.

As a caveat, please don't misrepresent yourself. Don't, for example, tell us an artist is onboard and once we express interest tell us s/he has bailed and you need help finding a new artist. Believe us, it's happened, and all it does is make you look unprofessional. Treat us with honesty and respect and we will do the same to you.

Creator Ownership - Creators retain all rights to their original characters, stories and art. If you are chosen to work on a property owned by one of our staff creators, you must sign a standard work-for-hire agreement between yourself and that creator.  At this time, Reasonably Priced Comics maintains ownership of nothing but its logo, name and the text pieces that appear in our publications, unless otherwise specified.
